CEO of the Texas Pharmacy Association Visits UTEP School of Pharmacy
Encourages Pharm.D. students to take active role in advocacy
RoxAnn Dominguez, Pharm.D., CEO of the Texas Pharmacy Association (TPA), spoke to a full and captive audience of students at UTEP’s School of Pharmacy in February 2025. Dominguez, a native El Pasoan, stepped into her position on Sept. 1, 2024, following a nationwide search for the organization’s next leader. Dominguez visited the School of Pharmacy to discuss her role as CEO and to emphasize the importance of engaging in advocacy through the TPA, the only organization in Texas that represents all Texas pharmacy professionals.
“As CEO, one of my active goals is to ensure that the profession of pharmacy is strong when it comes time for students at the UTEP School of Pharmacy to enter our professional ranks,” Dominguez said. “A crucial way to strengthen our profession is by ensuring that pharmacists throughout Texas are part of the discussions that happen at the state level. Historically, there hasn’t been a strong representation of pharmacists from El Paso. Part of the relationship I hope to build with the UTEP School of Pharmacy is to create an arena where students feel empowered to use their voice to help shape the profession that they will one day enter.”
Dominguez is one of two El Pasoans who will lead the TPA – the other is incoming president Jason Davis. According to Dominguez, having two high-ranking members in TPA from the same community is rare, but José Rivera, Pharm.D., founding dean of the UTEP School of Pharmacy, believes the TPA’s new leadership highlights the value of the community-driven perspective that permeates El Paso.
“Dr. Dominguez’ appointment as CEO reflects her ability to be a staunch advocate for the pharmacists and people that call Texas home,” Rivera said. “El Pasoans are inherently community driven, and her new role signals that a more community-driven approach to pharmacy is crucial to strengthening the profession of pharmacy. We are proud of the role the UTEP School of Pharmacy has played thus far in uplifting our community by expanding access to healthcare. We look forward to growing our relationship with TPA and in helping our students become better advocates for their patients.”
One way that UTEP pharmacy students can expand their professional horizons and learn about how decisions are made at the state level is by joining the Texas Pharmacy Association. Beyond opportunities to participate in legislative advocacy, members also have access to continuing education programs, networking events and the TPA career center.
