Robert Wilson
Professor of Practice, Bachelor of Business Administration in General Business
Robert Wilson is a business owner and former Wall Street employee. He came to UTEP to pursue his passion for teaching and is now at the end of his fifth year here.
Subjects he teaches:
Business Analytics and Probability for Actuaries.
On what ignited his passion for these subjects:
I have always loved math, especially calculus, probability and statistics. It is probably because those are the subjects I am good at and those that came easily to me.
His proudest accomplishment and biggest challenge as an online instructor:
The proudest moment of teaching is when a student sees their potential and pursues it. In business school, most students are focused on pursuing a career. When they find something they love and they get it, I am always happy.
The biggest challenge online is it is difficult to let students know about the many opportunities that the College of Business Administration (COBA) provides and how important they are, and encourage them to pursue those opportunities. Learning statistics or probability is great, but the real goal is finding a passion.
On what makes a successful online student:
For any student, a strong passion to find what interests them. For online students specifically, self-motivation is important. It is easy to fall behind without peers beside you.
His advice to his students:
A student needs to be involved in the school activities to succeed. Classes are only one component of a successful college experience. Get involved.
