2020 Graduate, Bachelor of Arts in Organizational and Corporate Communication
Betty Smith was a student in the online Bachelor of Arts in Organizational and Corporate Communication with a minor in Criminal Justice. Online learning has provided her with the flexibility and convenience she needs as someone with a full-time job and three kids.
She graduated in May 2020.
Why she enrolled in the program:
I was originally enrolled in the BMS studies online, but I decided that I wanted something a little more specific than a completion degree.
On her experience with online learning:
I have an associate’s degree in Criminal Justice from Central Texas College, I completed almost all of those classes online. UTEP offered way more support than that school, the advisors here are very supportive and awesome.
Online learning is super convenient. I have a full-time job and three kids, I would never have the time to attend traditional classes. Online learning allowed me to complete my studies on my time.
What she plans to do next:
I think this degree plan will be useful across the board, both in public service and the private sector. I have always wanted to manage a police department or similar government office.
On the support available to her as an online student:
My advisor was great, I have spent a lot of time on the phone running "what ifs" by him. He helped me change my degree plan with ease and helped to be sure I have the classes I needed and that I was enrolled on time.
I would choose this program again... out of the degree plans offered at UTEP Connect I still feel like this one is the most versatile and translatable across the board in any career path... I also feel like the communication skills I have acquired will help me in my personal relationships as well.
What she would say to a prospective online student:
This program was very labor-intensive for me. However, the work is interesting so it is not that bad. The principles I have learned in my classes at UTEP in regards to marketing and communication will be very valuable in any career path I find myself in. Even my personal life, I feel like I have learned a lot about others I never would have, otherwise.
