Hadya Gonzalez
Student, master of social work
Hadya Gonzalez was born and raised in El Paso. She has a rooted curiosity regarding human behavior and a strong desire to help others in meaningful ways.
During Hadya's time as an undergraduate student at UTEP, she developed a deep interest in how the brain works and functions, particularly in areas like lifespan development, how early experiences shape future functioning, and mental health disorders. She found herself leaning towards the intersection of theory and real-world application, and understanding how the knowledge of why people behave a certain way might be applied in the clinical world in support for their healing and change in neuroplasticity.
Hadya plans to graduate in May 2027.
Why she enrolled in the program:
My interest in pursuing a Master of Social Work in an online format derived from being allowed to balance my academic goals while managing other life responsibilities. I chose social work over other helping professions because of its ethical foundation, diverse community, and the broadness it offers when it comes to choosing your specialty in the field.
Her experience with online learning:
During my undergraduate studies, I was able to take a few online courses, which allowed me to become more comfortable with that format. I’ve found that I actually prefer online learning because it gives me the opportunity to manage my time more efficiently and decreases the need for long commutes. Therefore, my prior experiences have helped me navigate the online MSW program, and it is well-suited to my learning style.
My experience with online learning has been effective and meaningful due to the constant support I have from my professors; it also allows me to still have a balanced and enjoyable life outside of my studies. Once I obtain my degree, I hope to take my licensure exam and engage in clinical work as a therapist, which this online MSW program is preparing me for. I then plan on obtaining my LCSW and eventually open a private practice. This program has also motivated me in pursuing a Doctor of Social Work (DSW) and teaching at the university level later on, as I value research, continued learning, and the opportunity to mentor further professionals in the field.
On whether this degree has played a part in her employment:
This degree has played a part in my current employment because it allows me to acquire internship opportunities at any agencies of my interest. The program requires you to find an internship with their assistance while you complete your degree. Currently, I am a clinical intern and I have received the full support, knowledge, and experience from my placement, and hope to continue my clinical journey. There are also many placements that offer stipends or other financial opportunities.
On the support she has received:
I certainly have the support I need in this program, all thanks to Dr. Jason Mallonee, the program coordinator and amazing clinical professor. The support I have received from not only him, but also the rest of the faculty, has made this experience meaningful and manageable. The professors in this program leave a memorable mark on the students. Dr. Viridiana Ortiz has also been a remarkable professor and mentor who has given me support and provides a great learning experience for her students.
What she would say to prospective online students:
I would want other prospective students to know that this program provides you with a constant learning experience. They should know that it is important to come with an open mind and be ready to become overwhelmed at times with balancing course work, internship and other life responsibilities. Practicing self-care is also very important in order to prevent burnout and continue with your passion.
On whether she would enroll in this program again if she had to do things over:
If I had to do this over, I would most definitely enroll in this program again because it has taught me so many things in just the span of one year. Seeing the faculty and students’ passion for this work is what makes me continue striving and improving for my future.
