Connection drives discovery. The Faculty Travel Incentive Program (FTIP) helps UTEP researchers expand their reach, funding travel that leads to new ideas, collaborations, and proposals. Every trip represents a conversation that could change a career, a partnership that could redefine a field, or a presentation that could open the next door.

FTIP isn’t just travel support. It’s strategic mobility, an investment in visibility, credibility, and future funding.

Purpose

FTIP supports faculty who take UTEP’s story beyond the campus, those who meet program officers face-to-face, present new work to peers, and build networks that strengthen future grant submissions.

The goal is simple: to help researchers connect with where ideas are shared, shaped, and funded.

Vision

  • Empower faculty to engage directly with funding agencies.
  • Increase visibility of UTEP’s research and creative excellence.
  • Support travel that leads to new proposals and partnerships.
  • Reward proactive research leadership.

  • Cycles: Spring, Summer, Fall
  • Award Amount: Travel support for professional meetings, agency visits, or proposal development

Selection Priorities

Reviewers look for:

  • Strategic Intent. The connection between the travel activity and an upcoming funding opportunity, collaboration, or proposal development.
  • Institutional Benefit. Potential of travel opportunity to strengthen UTEP’s visibility, research competitiveness, or participation in national networks.
  • Preparation and Planning. Documentation of confirmed meetings, invitations, or presentation acceptances demonstrating purpose and readiness.
  • Outcomes and Follow-Up. Defined post-travel goals such as proposal submission, partnership agreement, or manuscript development.

Annual Cycle

The Faculty Travel Incentive Program (FTIP) has three (3) cycles. Refer to the Award Cycles table above for information on releases and notifications. Each project runs for one year and concludes with a report that documents outcomes, data generated, partnerships formed, publications submitted, and planned external proposals. These reports become part of UTEP’s collective story of discovery and competitiveness.
