NOTICE: THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT HAS POSTPONED THE 2020 TAX FILING DEADLINE FROM APRIL 15 TO JULY 15.
To help international students learn about the U.S. tax system and understand what they must do, if anything, to stay in compliance with tax laws, OIP hosts tax workshops held by UTEP faculty with experience filing taxes for international students.
Our spring 2020 tax workshops were held in February and March. Typically, tax filing assistance services are held via the VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program, with specific dates for international students. Due to COVID-19, these tax sites have been closed for spring 2020. You can find more information at http://www.freetaxeselpaso.org/.
Most international students have fairly straightforward tax situations, and should be able to fill out forms by hand with the instructions provided by the IRS. In this case, students will mail the tax form to the IRS. If you had your forms completed at a VITA site last year, you can use last year's copy to help you fill out your form this year.
You can find resources for filing below:
- Form 1040-NR (this is the filing requirement for foreign students considered non-residents who had income during the year): https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040nr.pdf;
- Instructions for form 1040-NR: https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040nr.pdf;
- Form 8843 (this is a filing requirement for most non-residents with a F, J, Q or M visa): https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f8843.pdf;
- Publication 519 (the “textbook” resource for all tax matters related to U.S. Aliens): https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p519.pdf
While OIP cannot advise on tax filings, if you have questions, please email email@example.com once you have reviewed the above materials, and we will put you in touch with someone who can help.
