Dr Mahmud Hossain Named Interim Chair of UTEPs Department of Computer Science

The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) has appointed Mahmud Shahriar Hossain, Ph.D., as interim chair of the Department of Computer Science. Dr. Hossain, a faculty member since 2013, brings a wealth of expertise in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and deep learning to his new leadership role.

Dr. Hossain earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Virginia Tech in 2012 and has established himself as a distinguished researcher and educator. His work bridges theoretical and applied AI, exploring the mathematics behind machine learning algorithms while addressing real-world challenges. His collaborations span diverse fields such as agriculture, biomedical sciences, national security, and energy-efficient design, showcasing his ability to develop impactful, interdisciplinary solutions.

As interim chair, Dr. Hossain is poised to build on the department’s legacy of high-impact research and academic excellence. He will focus on expanding research initiatives, fostering industry collaborations, and preparing students for leadership roles in the rapidly evolving technology landscape of computer science.

“Dr. Hossain’s dedication to advancing the field of AI and his collaborative approach to solving complex challenges make him an outstanding choice to lead the Department of Computer Science,” said Dr. Kenith Meissner, dean of the College of Engineering. “Under his guidance, the department will continue to thrive as a hub of innovation and excellence.”

Dr. Hossain steps into this role following the leadership of Salamah Salamah, Ph.D., who served as chair from 2020 to 2024. During his tenure, Dr. Salamah achieved significant milestones, including securing prestigious National Security Agency (NSA) Center of Academic Excellence designations and launching undergraduate and graduate AI programs.

Dr. Salamah has recently been named Associate Vice President for Scientific Computing and Artificial Intelligence at UTEP. In this role, he will lead university-wide efforts to advance AI research and build cutting-edge computing infrastructure, further positioning UTEP as a leader in innovation and technology.

These appointments highlight UTEP’s commitment to driving excellence in computing and artificial intelligence. With Dr. Hossain’s forward-thinking leadership and Dr. Salamah’s contributions at the university level, the Department of Computer Science is well-positioned to address the challenges and opportunities of a technology-driven future.
