The College of Engineering at The University of Texas at El Paso is proud to announce that Mechanical Engineering Student Iris Alvarez has been named a 2008 The Chrysler Foundation Scholarship recipient.
The HENAAC Board of Directors and Scholarship Selection committee chose scholarship recipients on the basis of scholarship, leadership and service to the community.
As a scholarship recipient, Alvarez will receive an educational grant plus travel and hotel accommodations to the HENAAC Conference in Houston, Texas. She will also be listed in the conference issue of TECHNiCA Magazine and be honored at the HENAAC Student Leadership Luncheon in October.
According to Dr. Vinod Kumar, Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Iris is a brilliant student who performs very well academically.
“Iris epitomizes the successful UTEP student,” said Dr. Peter Golding, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies and Engineering Education Research. “She leads our joint student chapter of two key professional societies – the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) and the Society of Mexican American Engineers & Scientists (MAES). Iris and other outstanding women like her are helping us to achieve our goal of advancing opportunities for minorities and women in engineering. I am thrilled at this announcement!”
