Your Cost of Attendance
Your cost of attendance, COA, or budget, is an estimate of how much it costs for you to live and study while you're enrolled at UTEP. The COA is used to calculate your financial need and how much financial aid you can receive, but it's not the amount you pay - your net price could be much lower if you are eligible for grants, scholarships, and other types of aid, like exemptions. If you are registered, you can see the exact charges and expected financial aid in your statement. If you are in the process of being admitted, or just curious, you can estimate what your net price could be using our Net Price Calculator.
UTEP only bills you for direct costs like tuition, but your COA includes allowances for things you pay outside of the University, like school supplies and living expenses. Your cost of attendance is also the maximum amount of financial aid you can receive from UTEP. Here are the components of your COA:
The average cost of tuition and fees for students based on your program, whether you are a Texas resident, and how many credits you enroll in. This is an approximation of what you pay to UTEP, but it's not a bill. After you register for classes, you can see exactly how much your tuition costs in the student portal.
We assume you will attend full-time until you tell us otherwise or until census day, when your enrollment is "locked" for financial aid purposes.
Living expenses (food and housing)
The average cost of food and housing for a student in El Paso, Texas. This is not something you pay to UTEP, unless you live in UTEP housing, and it's an expense you probably would pay even if you were not a college student. However, if you receive financial aid while attending UTEP, it can help you pay for these costs.
We calculate a different amount of food and housing depending on if you live with your parents or other family members, by yourself, or at UTEP dormitories. We only include housing and food in your cost of attendance if you are attending at least half-time.
The average cost of books and school supplies for a typical student.
The cost of getting to UTEP from home and back, or from UTEP to work, etc. The estimate we use includes the cost of gas and typical maintenance of a vehicle, but not car payments.
An allowance for things like clothing, laundry, personal hygiene items, etc. Your actual costs may vary, depending on lifestyle choices you make. We only include these costs if you are attending at least half-time.
If you borrow a student loan, we add the average cost of origination fees to your COA.
Health insurance (if required by your program)
Certain programs, like the Doctor of Physical Therapy program, require you to buy health insurance. If you are in that program, we include the average cost of health insurance in your COA.
Other costs that can be included
There are other costs that can be added to your COA, but we don't include them automatically. Examples are:
- Dependent care or day care, based on the number and ages of your children and other dependents.
- The cost of a required professional license or certification.
- The cost of a study abroad program.
- Expenses because of having a disability.
If you pay for any of these, submit a cost of attendance review request.
Here are the current cost of attendance amounts for each level or program and residency status. Tuition and fees are based on full-time enrollment and will be reduced if you enroll less than full-time. If you attend less than half-time, your cost of attendance will only include tuition and fees, books and supplies, transportation, and dependent care expenses:

What you pay to UTEP as a full-time student should be very close to the tuition and fees amounts above: the average Texas resident undergraduate student pays between $8,000 and $9,000 for full-time enrollment in both fall and spring. After you register for courses, you can see the exact amount in your statement. You can also see the current tuition rates by credit for each program in the Student Business Services website. Our tuition cost has been the same since 2021, and will not increase at least through 2027.
If you live in UTEP housing, you can look at the current rates in the Housing and Residence Life website.
As for your living expenses, these will vary depending on your personal situation and lifestyle.
What if my costs are different?
We calculate your cost of attendance based on what the average student pays, but your costs could be slightly higher or lower. If your cost is significantly different and you have documentation, submit a cost of attendance review request, and we will make adjustments in a case-by-case basis.
