Emerging Engineers, Class of 2023: Victoria Obregon, Driven to Provide Clean Water for All

Victoria Obregon, a 23-year-old civil engineering graduate from The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), is determined to make a lasting impact on the world by addressing the global water crisis. Her commitment to preserving the environment, combined with her engineering expertise, propels her mission to provide clean and safe water to underprivileged communities.

From an early age, Obregon's fascination with the natural world sparked a desire to safeguard its beauty and vulnerability. While initially exploring paths in veterinary medicine and marine biology, she ultimately discovered her true calling in civil engineering, recognizing the immense potential it offered for promoting environmental conservation. Motivated by the startling statistic that only 26% of the world's population has access to clean water, Obregon set her sights on designing and implementing sustainable infrastructure projects to make a tangible difference.

Throughout her journey, Obregon encountered numerous challenges, including financial hardships and personal loss. However, these obstacles have shaped her into the resilient individual she is today, fueling her determination to create a better future for communities in need. Living in El Paso, she developed a deep appreciation for water resources and recognized the urgent need for clean water access worldwide.

Reflecting on the opportunities afforded to her by UTEP, Obregon stated, "I am immensely grateful for the education and support I received at UTEP. This university has not only equipped me with the technical expertise needed for my career but has also fostered an inclusive environment that celebrates diversity. Being a Hispanic student, I am proud to have attended a university that prioritizes equal opportunities and empowers students like me to make a meaningful impact. UTEP has played a pivotal role in shaping my journey and providing me with the tools to pursue my passion for environmental engineering and make a difference in the world."

Looking towards the future, Obregon shared her aspirations, saying, "Moving forward, I plan to apply the knowledge and skills I've gained over the past five years to my career. I am excited to work in water and wastewater treatment design, where I can contribute to providing clean and safe water to communities in need. My immediate goals include obtaining my Professional Engineering license and pursuing a master's degree in environmental engineering. Ultimately, I aim to expand my work globally, striving to address the remaining 74% of the world lacking access to clean water. With dedication and collaboration, I believe we can create a future where clean water is accessible to all, promoting health, equality, and sustainable development worldwide."

Obregon's dedication to the environment and her strong commitment to fostering global equity have established her as a compelling advocate for clean water. Through her tireless efforts, she aims to make a lasting impact in tackling one of humanity's most urgent challenges.

As Victoria Obregon embarks on her career, her passion and determination serve as a beacon of hope, reminding us of all the power of individuals to effect positive change in the world.
