Welcome to the inaugural UTEP College of Engineering newsletter. This new College of Engineering creation will serve as a showcase space for recent news, a closer look at students, faculty, staff and alumni, and insights into our various research efforts.
This newsletter will be an extension of the news and content that is shared on The University of Texas at El Paso’s main website as well as the college site. Here you will find stories that exemplify how the College of Engineering uniquely positions its students for success through a broad array of educational resources, intellectual discovery, interdisciplinary research and engaging opportunities.
In that vein, the college was pleased to welcome its new Aerospace and Aeronautical Engineering degree program this year. The degree — which is housed in the recently renamed Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering — is designed to prepare students for careers in aerospace, aeronautical and defense systems engineering and related disciplines. The program will have a unique set of foci including defense, small satellite, propulsion systems, exploration vehicles, autonomous systems and hypersonics. Our website offers more information about this and the rest of the degrees that the college offers, which can launch careers for students of all disciplines of engineering.
At the College of Engineering, students have access to a wealth of research opportunities and professional experiences with our partners in industry, nonprofit, government and private sectors. I am deeply honored to serve as the Dean of the College of Engineering at this remarkable University. While UTEP is a new setting for me, the academic challenges and the college’s strategic priorities are familiar territory. I am excited to join you in using proven strategies and developing new methods to deliver an excellent experience to students from underserved backgrounds, mold leaders, develop innovators and push the boundaries of knowledge, making a critical impact on the future of the Paso del Norte region and beyond.
We hope you will be part of our journey and continue to support the work that is described in this and future newsletters. Please share any ideas you’d like us to promote and we will work on including it in a future edition.
The College of Engineering is primed for continued growth and ascension, and I’m proud to work alongside you as dean. I express profound appreciation to Dr. Patricia Nava who played a pivotal role in leading our College as interim dean since March 2020. I very much look forward to meeting with you and learning about your experiences in the coming months.
