WestStar Mentors Guide Hunt Students Through Fiduciary Practice

The Big Picture
The UTEP Banking Academy partnered with WestStar Wealth Management to launch the Wealth Management Mentorship Program — a semester-long experience designed to immerse Hunt Business students in the principles that define fiduciary practice.
Over Fall 2025, a select group of undergraduates worked through six core modules on the Fiduciary Practice Models while engaging directly with industry professionals who bring those concepts to life.
Why It Matters
Fiduciary work sits at the heart of wealth management. It's built on trust, regulation, and a clear duty of care — responsibilities that shape every client relationship and investment decision.
What Students Learned
Throughout the semester, students completed modules covering:
- Introduction to Trust and the Fiduciary
- Trust Regulation
- The 17 Duties of a Fiduciary
- Uniformity and Uniform Law
- Introduction to Securities
- Key Concepts of Risk Management
Each month, students met over lunch with WestStar team members to discuss how these topics play out in day-to-day advisory work — from regulatory compliance and risk assessment to client communication and portfolio oversight.
What Happens Next
The program continues into Spring 2026, pairing students with individual WestStar mentors who provide the guidance, conversations, and real advisory workflows that define success in fiduciary and wealth management.
