Each fall Panhellenic hosts the formal recruitment process to allow potential female members to explore their options in joining one of the three National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) sororities present at UTEP.  Recruitment registration opens June 1, 2019.

What is Formal Recruitment?

Formal recruitment is a mutual selection process held each fall semester that allows for potential female new members and chapters to find the best organizational fit for future members. Through this four-day process, potential new members will visit with the three chapters participating in formal recruitment. The days will consist of Open House, Philanthropy, and Preference round, leading to a mutual decision at the end of the week made with one chapter at the conclusion of the process.

Why go through Panhellenic Formal Recruitment?

The experience women will have going through Formal Recruitment will give them the opportunity to meet new people, network, and grow as an individual. Panhellenic offers a Values-Based Recruitment Experience that focuses on meaningful conversations with potential new members, who will have a positive impact on the Panhellenic community.

What do I need to register for Recruitment and when can I sign up?

Registration for Formal Recruitment will open on June 1, 2019 on Campus Director and close on September 3, 2019 at 11:00 pm. Please be prepared when registering with your most recent GPA (High School, UTEP, or Transfer), high school and/or college extracurricular involvement (if applicable), and Legacy Information (if applicable).

What is the GPA for Formal Recruitment?

There is no general GPA to go through Formal Recruitment. However, each individual chapters have their minimum GPA for their members. Please ask the chapters for their individual chapter GPAs when going through the process.

What do I need to wear for Recruitment?

Potential New Members are encouraged to dress in clothing that is comfortable for them and expresses their individuality. The first day will be casual and will lead up to dressing in semi-formal attire.

Orientation/Informational Meeting: PNMs are encouraged to wear a nice blouse with some nice shorts or jeans on this day. Sandals or Sneakers are appropriate for this day.

Open House Night: PNMs will be given a T-Shirt to wear on this night and are encouraged to wear nice dress shorts, skirts, or nice pants. Sandals, flats, or wedges are encouraged on this night.

Philanthropy Night: This night is slightly nicer than the rest. Think something you would wear to a nice brunch. Summer Dresses or nice blouses with nice pants are acceptable for this round. Sandals, Heels, or Wedges are encouraged on this night.

Preference Night: This night will be the most dressed up. Think about something you would wear to a nice dinner for this night (Cocktail Attire). A nice dress or nice blouse and slacks are acceptable for this round. Heels and Wedges are encouraged for this night, nice sandals or flats would be acceptable.

Bid Day: This day will be much more casual. Chapters will be giving you a T-Shirt on this day so please wear shorts, jeans, or a casual skirt for this day. Comfortable shoes like Sneakers, sandals, and Tennis Shoes are encouraged on this day.

I am a Legacy, what does that mean?

Legacies are potential new members who have a Familial relationship to someone in a Sorority. They can be related to an Active or an Alumna member of the organization. Most common relationships would be mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, etc. This means you have a direct relation to the organization but it does not guarantee membership to the specific sorority. When filling out your Registration, please list if you are a Legacy and to what respective chapter.

How much are the dues for Panhellenic Sororities?

Each chapter has individual dues for their organizations. They all spend their dues differently; most common would be on events, formals, and active wear. As a New Member, dues will be more expensive due to one-time fees to their National Organizations. After the New Member Period, dues will be lowered for the items that will be needed for the semester/year. Each organization has payment plans set up to help their members manage paying their dues throughout the semester.

Recruitment Vocabulary

Bid – An invitation to join a sorority.

Initiated Member- A member of a Sorority who has been through the initiation process of their Sorority

New Member- A member of a Sorority who has started their New Member Process but has not been initiated into the organization.

Potential New Member/PNM – A person who is going through the recruitment process.

Values Based Recruitment- A process that will focus primarily on meaningful conversations and not on materialistic items or ideals.
