MGC FAQs
Do I need to be a certain race/ethnicity to join MGC fraternities/sororities?
No, MGC chapters are open and welcoming across all cultural backgrounds. What is important to recognize is that an organization’s foundation may be rooted in a particular cultural experience that shapes the chapter’s mission and vision. Organizations that are multicultural in interest or experience also have differences in the way they function.
What is open and closed process for New Member Education in MGC organizations?
MGC chapters bring in a new class through a process that can be open (public process) or closed (private process). Through an open process, new members are allowed to disclose what organization they are in. A closed process is private and unknown to the greater community. When going through their new member education, new members are not to disclose what organization they are a part of until they cross (initiate). Some organizations have a presentation to present their new member class when they are fully crossed. They will then be able to speak about what organization they have joined. These new member processes consist of interviews, bonding activities, history lessons, and more.
What happens if I choose not to continue the new member process?
There is no obligation to complete the process. If there are any difficulties in the process or other concerns, please contact the SELC at 915 747-5670.

Interfraternity Council
Interfraternity Council is the governing body of the North American Interfraternity Conference at UTEP. UTEP hosts two Interfraternity Chapters and one Colony Chapter out of the total 66 National Fraternities. Founded in 1909, IFC serves to enrich the fraternity experience, advance and grow the fraternity community, and enhance the educational experience of fraternity members.
IFC Recruitment
During the Fall and Spring semesters, IFC will host large recruitment events at the beginning of each semester. These events are to create personal connections for potential members and active members. Recruitment is a mutual selection process that allows for potential new members and chapters to find the best organizational fit. These organizations will host their events individually from each other.
Potential members are free to go to as many events as they would like from all different chapters. You are not limited to one and are encouraged to meet all active chapters to find your best fit. At the end of the recruitment process, there is a possibility you may be offered an invitation called a “bid” to membership. You could be offered a bid from one, multiple chapters, or none of the chapters.
IFC FAQs
How much time will I be expected to commit to a fraternity?
Being in a fraternity could devote anywhere from 2-8 hours a week depending on the season. All fraternities have a weekly meeting and throughout the semester chapters will host brotherhood events, philanthropy, and recruitment events. These could take more time but remember a fraternity is only as fun as you make it. Ask individual chapter members about their experience with the time commitment.
Am I the “Fraternity Type”?
There is no “fraternity type”. A fraternity is a group of diverse men who want to grow alongside one another through their college years. All members differ from chapter to chapter and individuality is praised in the FSL community as a whole. Going in with an open mind will help you find the right place for you.
