Advising Process
Click on the tabs below to learn what to do prior to your advising appointment and how advising will occur for you.
If you are new to UTEP
Make sure you do the following before you attend your advising appointment:
- Ensure that your transcripts have been evaluated; transcript evaluation will not occur until an admissions decision has been made and you need to have them evaluated before you are advised. This ensures that classes you may have previously taken transfer over properly, and that you do not end up repeating courses.
- Take the tests you need (see information on CLEP under that tab)
- Check your holds. Holds may hinder your ability to get enrolled in certain classes
- Get your degree plan: You must receive your official degree plan from your advisor. Once you’ve been admitted to UTEP, you can access your degree evaluation online in Goldmine for planning purposes. If your transfer credits have been evaluated, they will be reflected along with other courses you’ve taken at UTEP. The degree evaluation will also indicate what coursework you have left to complete. Please contact your Student Success Advisor if you have any questions about the degree evaluation. BMS students’ coursework will not be reflected on the degree plans within the advising tool. Please refer to the degree plan developed by the BMS Department.
- Know the number of hours/courses you want for the following semester (Note: this will vary based on financial assistance).
- Make a list of questions
Once you have been advised, make sure you complete your application and turn in all necessary documents as soon as they become available. Classes fill up quickly, and failure to do this may result in classes you don’t want, or delay your progression through the program.
If you are a continuing student (i.e. you have been enrolled before and are simply continuing with your program)
You will work with your student success advisor to select your courses each semester. You will be advised each semester (Fall, Spring, Summer) and provided with an updated degree plan and checklist to track your development. In addition, your student success advisor will provide strategies and suggestions on being a successful online student.
Set up your advising appointment as soon as you can and to get the most out of your appointment, do the following before you meet with your student success advisor.
- Check your holds. Holds may hinder your ability to get enrolled in certain classes
- Know the amount of hours/courses you want for the following semester (Note: this will vary based on financial assistance)
- Run a degree evaluation (click on the button below to get more details)
- Make a list of questions
Depending on their program, most students will be advised every semester by their Student Success Advisor. In most undergraduate programs, your Student Success Advisor will help you throughout your program until graduation. They will be your point of contact for questions about courses, registration, graduation, and many other student processes. They will touch base and advise you three times a year.
