Blackboard Ultra

Over the Winter break, some very noticeable changes were made to the Blackboard interface. Both students and faculty now see a new landing page that is simple, modern, and easy to use. The left menu provides an easier way to access resources like Courses, Grades, and the Activity Stream, which is a feed of important alerts from all of your courses. The new design is also responsive, so it works well on any device. For help with anything Blackboard related, please contact the Technology Support help desk at helpdesk@utep.edu.

Free Microsoft Office Software

Programs like Microsoft Word and Excel can be accessed in a variety of ways. Students can use the web-based versions of these programs for free from the menu located in their UTEP email. Students may also download Microsoft Office programs to their computer or laptop for free by searching within utep.onthehub.com. For a significantly reduced price, Faculty and staff can download Microsoft Office programs to their personal devices via utep.onthehub.com. Many other programs are also available for reduced educational prices. The programs you download via utep.onthehub.com will stay on your computer even after you leave UTEP.

MatLab & Mathematica

MatLab and Mathematica are two popular software environments for students in Engineering, Computer Science, and Business. Similar to other software, these are available at no cost to UTEP students, faculty, and researchers. This powerful software can be accessed directly from the cloud through a web browser without any installation or configuration requirements. You may also download the software to your device if you prefer to keep it on your computer. Use the links below for directions on how to use or install MatLab and Mathematica on your device.

Large Active Learning Classroom

Education room 302 has been transformed into UTEP's first large-size Technology Enhanced Active Learning (TEAL) classroom. This room has an open floor plan with moveable desks and furniture, 8 individual television monitors which students can connect to wirelessly, a large projection for the instructor, and wireless plushy microphones students can toss around. This classroom provides faculty the flexibility to modify the learning environment and shift technology to break students into groups and engage in team-based learning. Active learning classrooms are not new to UTEP, but until recently have only been available to small enrollment classes. The new TEAL classroom can now facilitate class sizes of up to 70 students.

The Affordable Materials Initiative

The effort to make classroom materials more affordable for students at UTEP is growing every semester. One way faculty and staff are accomplishing this is by taking advantage of Open Educational Resources (OER) that are available for little to no cost. This year, in collaboration with the University Library, Technology Support's TeachTech Program was transformed into an initiative designed to empower a group of faculty to replace their commercial textbooks using Blackboard as the platform for all reading materials, supplemental learning content (in the form of multimedia), and access to library database resources. This initiative is set to complete in the fall of 2020 and has already saved students over $43,000 on textbook costs this spring semester.
