Have you ever had an experience where you are going about your day and suddenly find yourself thinking about EBITDA or wondering why some firms can continuously innovate for years despite changing business landscapes? Don’t worry, you’re not losing your mind – you just need a Ph.D.
Thankfully, burgeoning academics everywhere can rejoice as applications for the Ph.D. program at the Woody L. Hunt College of Business are being accepted. The full-time program, which focuses on preparing new generations of faculty from diverse backgrounds, provides curious business minds with their desired intellectual growth through research and faculty mentorship.
Students in the doctoral program, which typically takes four years to complete, conduct research specialized in accounting, finance, management, or marketing while also teaching in their field of interest.
“We’re preparing a generation of business scholars that reflects the demographics of the business world and extends the frontiers of the theory and practice of business,” said Richard Posthuma, Ph.D., director of the program. “Students will find that every facet of the program, from classes to research opportunities and faculty mentorship, is designed with the aim of producing graduates who can turn intellectual curiosity into actionable insights that have a positive impact on society.”
The decision to pursue a Ph.D. means leaving a full-time position for the promise of greater earning potential down the line, but that doesn’t mean students have to elect between an education or financial security. Doctoral candidates are provided stipends and both fellowship and teaching opportunities are available to cover the cost of tuition and living expenses.
Prospective students will also be glad to hear of the continued market demand for business faculty and UTEP graduates’ success in securing employment. Salaries for new business professors average over $100,000 and graduates of UTEP’s doctorate of business program can be found working in universities from coast to coast and abroad.
“I have worked in both private and public institutions in California and Texas and each time I know I have contributed to the quality of scholarship and student learning in these institutions,” said Justin Munoz, Ph.D. a 2021 graduate and assistant professor of marketing at Angelo State University. “Without a doubt, I believe that the UTEP faculty and the Ph.D. program have prepared me for these experiences and helped me achieve my dream of becoming a tenure-track marketing professor.”
