Updating macOS apps without an Apple ID
To update the macOS built-in apps GarageBand, iMovie, Keynote, Numbers or Pages without the need for an Apple ID, please follow these steps:
Your Mac needs to have "Self Service" installed. If it doesn't, please contact Liberal Arts TIM Andy Castellanos at acastellanos@utep.edu to have your Mac configured.
1. Launch the macOS "App Store" from Applications, Launchpad or from the Dock:
2. Once the App Store is running, you can see the apps that need updating by clicking "Updates" on the left-hand column:
3. The page will then update with a listing of apps that need updating. You can click on "UPDATE" to update the app BUT IT WILL REQUIRE AN APPLE ID AND PASSWORD. If you wish to have the updated app without an Apple ID, note the apps that need updates (in this example it's GarageBand) and close the App Store:
4. Open a new Finder window and select "Applications." In this example, GarageBand needs an update so it will be selected:
5. Once selected, you can Control-click (or right-click) and "Move to Trash" to delete the app. You can also drag the app to the Trash to delete (you may need to authenticate with administrator rights):
6. Once the app has been deleted, launch "Self Service" either from the Dock, Launchpad or from Applications:
7. From "Self Service," select the app that needs updating (it should say "Install" and not "Open"). Install the updated app. Repeat the process for the other applications that need updating.
