Using the Privileges app
To request temporary administrator rights on your Mac, please follow these steps to use the Privileges app:
If the Privileges app is not installed on your Mac computer, please contact Liberal Arts TIM Andy Castellanos at acastellanos@utep.edu to have your Mac properly configured.
1. Launch the "Privileges" app (it's normally an icon of a white, closed padlock surrounded by a green background) from the Dock:
1b. If it's not in your Dock, you can launch the app from your "Applications" folder:
2. You will be presented with a prompt informing you of your request to temporarily obtain administrator privileges. Click on the "Request privileges" button to continue:
3. The icon will update to a black, unlocked padlock surrounded by a yellow background (denoting an unsafe state). Your account will have administrator privileges while this icon is in this state. You may perform any maintenance or software installations:
4. To remove your privileges, click on the icon again. You will be presented with a prompt informing you that you wish to remove your temporary administrator privileges. Click on the "Remove privileges" button to continue:
5. The computer will then return to its normal, Standard user state. The icon will return to its normal, white, closed padlock with a green background, denoting a safe state:
