Accessible Course Design

CASS promotes inclusive learning by supporting the implementation of accessible course design across campus. An accessible course is one that allows all students—regardless of disability—to engage fully with course content, materials, technology, and assessments.

What Is Accessible Course Design?

Accessible course design involves creating instructional materials and environments that are usable by all students, including those with visual, auditory, mobility, cognitive, and learning disabilities. This proactive approach minimizes the need for individual accommodations and helps create an equitable learning experience for everyone.

Why It Matters

Accessible course design benefits all students—not just those with disabilities. It improves usability, enhances learning outcomes, and ensures compliance with federal accessibility standards under the ADA and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.

Key components include:

  • Captioned videos and audio content
  • Digital materials compatible with screen readers
  • Clear, consistent course organization
  • Alternative text for images and graphics
  • Accessible documents (Word, PDF, PowerPoint)
  • Flexible assessment formats and engagement strategies

For Faculty

CASS partners with instructors to support the development of accessible course materials. We offer:

  • Consultation on accessibility best practices
  • Assistance with formatting some documents
  • Collaboration with university Technology Support to provide guidance and assistance with accessible course materials and accessibility on Blackboard.
