What is a Reasonable Accommodation?

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a reasonable accommodation in higher education refers to modifications or supports provided to students with disabilities to ensure equal access to academic programs, services, and activities.

These accommodations are designed to level the playing field—without fundamentally altering the nature of a course, program, or service, or imposing an undue burden on the University. Examples include extended testing time, assistive technology, note-taking support, and accessible course materials.

Examples of Possible Accommodations

Accommodations are determined on a case-by-case basis and may include (but are not limited to):

  • Extended time on assignments
  • Testing accommodations (e.g., extended time, reduced-distraction environment)
  • Note-taking support or services
  • Absence accommodations or absence policies (when appropriate)
  • Housing accommodations (e.g., accessible room or building, emotional support animal)
